Looking forward with a vision to solidify its position in the electric vehicle space, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art EV manufacturing and battery assembly facility in Chakan, Pune, designed exclusively for producing next-generation electric origin SUVs.

Next generation EV manufacturing hub

The facility is equipped with over 1,000 robots and advanced automated transfer systems creating a new standard in automated manufacturing. Beyond technology, Mahindra gives a strong emphasis on skill development and maintaining high-quality standards. Moreover, the EV manufacturing hub aims to foster an inclusive and progressive workplace culture to achieve 25% gender diversity ratio.

The new facility is strategically located within Mahindra’s 2.83 square km spread Chakan manufacturing hub occupying a total 88000 square meter space. The EV plant accommodates an automated press shop, an AI body shop and a robotic paint shop.  Mahindra’s latest ‘electric origin’ SUVs like the BE 6 and XEV 9E will be assembled here.

Fusion of technology and automation in Chakan

Mahindra’s new battery assembly facility is claimed to be one of the most space-efficient battery manufacturing lines in the world using industry 4.0 tech and a patented pallet design for optimal insulation and accuracy, in addition to hidden cell terminal welding for robust performance. These completely automated processes ensure the production of high-performance and long-lasting EV batteries.

The highly automated plant has 500 robots in the body shop monitored through a loT-enabled ‘Nerve Centre’ for real-time process insights and comprehensive traceability. It also incorporates Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for handling materials seamlessly.

Investment for Chakan facility

The facility operates as a water-positive site exclusively operated by renewable energy. Considering it as a part of its long-term strategy, Mahindra has allocated ₹4500 crore from its ₹16000 crore investment plan for FY22-27 for the development of the EV facility. This investment covers powertrain development, product design, including software and technology upgrades.

Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable mobility

“With this new state-of-the-art Chakan-based manufacturing and battery assembly facility, Mahindra takes another major step toward shaping the future of mobility. By combining localized battery assembly, high-end automation, and a dedication to innovation, Mahindra is reinforcing its commitment to “Make in India for the World” and contributing to India’s efforts to meet its COP26 targets for 2030”, Mahindra stated in a report.
