Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the joint venture between Japanese automotive giant Toyota Motor Corporation and the Kirloskar Group, is all set to launch its first-ever all-electric vehicle, the Urban Cruiser Electric, in India.

A rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara

The 5-seater Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is a rebadged version of the recently launched Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. With this new electric SUV, Toyota will enter India’s booming EV space. Earlier, Toyota unveiled the Urban Cruiser electric concept at the Auto Expo- 2025. The model will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki India’s Gujrat plant.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Design

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV can be positioned between a compact and mid-size SUV.  The new electric SUV has the same dimension as the e-Vitara with lots of EV-specific features of its own. It has a sleek design at the front that Toyota called a ‘hammerhead’. The overall length of the Cruiser EV is 4,285 mm. It has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. The height and width of the EV are 1,635 and 1,800 mm respectively.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Exterior

At the front, the Toyota BEV features LED headlamps with vertically stacked LED DRLS, a blanked-off grille and rear bumpers. While the side profile will get 18-inch or 19-inch large alloy wheels with chunky wheel cladding, the rear proudly features connected LED taillamps, a large diffuser and an integrated spoiler.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Interior

The interior of the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV could have a similar layout with the Suzuki e-Vitara with a black and grey colour theme. It will come equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch multimedia screen with smartphone integration. Other features include leathered upholstery, a fixed sunroof, a two-spoke steering wheel, a JBL premium audio system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, auto climate control, 12-colour ambient lighting and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Powertrain

To talk about the powertrain, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, like the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, will be offered in two Lithium-iron Phosphate battery pack options – 49kWh and 61kWh. Toyota is also offering the front-wheel drive (FWD) and the all-wheel drive (AWD) variants of the EV. Like e-Vitara, it will feature an e-Axle, which will integrate the motor and inverter into a single unit.

Both the 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs will have a single motor placed on the front axle and an output of 144hp and 174hp respectively. For the 49kWh battery pack, they both produce 189Nm of torque. The AWD variant is offered with a dual-motor setup positioned on the front and rear axle, producing output of 184hp and 300Nm of torque.

The range of the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV has not yet been revealed. However, it may have over 500km of range on a single full charge.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Safety features

In terms of safety, the Urban Cruiser BEV is equipped with advanced passenger and driver assistance systems. It offers tons of safety features like multiple airbags, a reverse parking system, a 360-degree camera, downhill assist control, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) with features including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system, lane departure alert, lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking.
